Almond, soy and oat emerged as the top kinds of vegan milks in this year’s World’s 10 Best Vegan Milks. Based on abillion’s data report “The Rise of Alternative Diaries,” published in 2020, abillion had predicted that oat-based dairy substitutes would dominate the market over the next three years. Oat is one of the most environmentally sustainable bases and has a lower cost of production.
Alpro’s ‘Soya Plain Drink Original’ has been awarded 1st place in this year’s ranking. Alpro has been in the plant-based innovation business since the 1980s. This pioneer plant-based brand with Belgian origins has expanded globally with a variety of plant-based foods and drinks. Alpro joined the Danone family of brands in 2017.
OATLY’s ‘Oat Drink Barista Edition’ came in 2nd place. Swedish oat drink company OATLY has been developing daily alternatives for the last 25 years. OATLY has aligned its brand messaging as a sustainability-focused organization as part of its appeal to a consumer base that is increasingly focused on environmental sustainability and plant-based alternatives. OATLY will be furthering its growth in the largest and fastest-growing market for vegan milks after securing $2.12 billion through its recent IPO.
Vívet and Vrink, two Argentinian brands, emerged on the World’s Best Vegan Milks list this year. Vivet is a vegan supermarket and a restaurant, started in 2016, that offers a variety of vegan products. Vrink is a 100% natural, plant-based drink company with two products in this year’s top 10. Their vegan milks contain vitamins and minerals and are made without any preservatives.
Vikas Garg, Founder and CEO, abillion, says, “In 2020, we published a report on alternative dairy that suggests that vegan milks are the fastest-growing category in dairy. Europe, South America, and North America are the most developed markets for alternative dairy products. In contrast, Asia and Africa are in their nascent stages, pointing towards a market expansion opportunity for brands that produce dairy-free products. We are excited to see smaller, regional players emerging and gaining popularity in this space. abillion is on a mission to connect responsible consumers to these businesses that offer quality plant-based products and make this world more sustainable.”
