Ah, just when you thought the path to flawless skin lay in your 15-step Korean beauty regimen and supply of skincare items. The only things you have, however, are irate pustules, cystic acne, and obstinate blackheads, not the filter-free life you’d imagined. And the harsh reality is that you will live with acne, scars, and other skin disorders far into adulthood, made worse by hormones, stress, sun damage, or just ageing (hello wrinkles and fine lines), especially for us females during our period.
But what if we told you that there is a focused, non-invasive approach that can stop the issue in its tracks and, over time, enhance the general health of your skin? In fact, each patient at MY Medical Aesthetics receives a personalised consultation and assessment of their skin issues in order to create a technology-driven, specialised treatment solution.
Before creating a customised MY treatment plan, Dr Lim Ming Yee, the founder and managing director of MY Medical Aesthetics, consults with each patient in-depth about their needs, skincare regimen, and medical history.
That is why when I got a chance to meet with Dr Lim, and get a consultation and a treatment while discussing aesthetic medicine, its scope and need, I couldn’t say no. After analysing my skin and its pigmentation issues, Dr suggested I get an Oxy revival facial for hydration and then I went for a Picosure laser treatment- it was not at all painful and there was almost no downtime for me. For my readers’ sake, I asked some in-depth questions from Dr Lim and he happily obliged. Here’s a gist of our conversation on skin, acne and more.
TVM: What makes MY Medical Aesthetics unique and different from other players in the market?
Dr Lim: At MY Medical Aesthetics, we place importance on listening to our patient’s concerns. We assess their skin conditions in detail, before formulating a comprehensive treatment plan according to their needs, budget and expectations. Patient safety is our top priority. We offer aesthetic treatments and quality medical-grade products that are approved by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) to ensure consistent and good clinical outcomes. We also educate our patients to adopt a good skincare routine, healthy lifestyle and healthy diet to enhance and prolong the treatment results. Every individual’s skin and beauty path is unique; everyone deserves to look and feel their best.
MY Medical Aesthetics was launched in 2017. In the past five years as a young business, how has the brand evolved, especially in light of a global pandemic?
Dr Lim: Although MY Medical Aesthetics is a relatively young clinic, I have been in the medical aesthetics field for more than 10 years and the medical field for more than 20 years. I constantly upgrade my knowledge of the latest technologies, treatments, and techniques to improve treatment outcomes and minimise downtime. In addition, I often travel to attend medical aesthetics conferences to learn and share with experts worldwide.

During the pandemic, although our clinic had to be closed for almost two months, our team took it in our stride. We used this period to improve our operational protocols, and treatment procedures and continued attending courses to upgrade ourselves. Subsequently, even when the clinic could open again for business, we maintained stringent safety measures, such as having to reschedule our patients’ appointments multiple times if they had been in close contact with any Covid-19 cases. Although this affected the appointment numbers and business in general, patient safety was our top priority.
Besides, I also ensure my team goes for training and workshops. I encourage them in their personal development because I love to see them grow with me. Hence, our patients and team have expanded over time, and we naturally needed a bigger space. In 2017, MY Medical Aesthetics was located at Bugis with only three private therapist rooms. Recently, we moved to a bigger and more luxurious space in Orchard, with ten private therapist rooms offering every patient exceptional discretion, comfort, and safety.
TVM: Please tell us more about your keen focus on patient safety and minimal downtime. What measures/technologies do you rely on to apply these principles?
Dr Lim: As shared earlier, patient safety is our top priority. We follow strict guidelines from the Ministry of Health and we use approved equipment and medical products that are backed by clinical trials. We check through their research papers and peer review articles in medical journals. Additionally, we will try the equipment or products to ensure they are safe and effective, and go the extra mile to minimise discomfort or downtime before implementing them into our practice. We plan every detail of the treatment protocol to enhance patients’ comfort level and clinical outcomes.
TVM: The brand is a culmination of your passion towards aesthetics and beauty. MY being your initials sits right in. Please share more about what inspired you to take this leap of faith and start your own clinic.
Dr Lim: I started my medical career in restructured hospitals in 2000. I was posted to various departments in Singapore General Hospital, KK Women’s and Children Hospital, and Alexandra Hospital. My love for arts and science since I was young eventually brought me to aesthetic medicine naturally. I decided to take a leap of faith to venture into aesthetic medicine. I attended multiple aesthetic courses and travelled to various countries for conferences and hands-on training. My passion and determination have driven me to where I am today and I will continue to improve over time for sure. As a doctor, I ensure that my clinic upholds the highest medical standards and integrity for patients.
TVM: I understand that you travel a lot to learn about the latest advancements in the field of aesthetics. Can you share some recent developments in the industry?
Dr Lim: I see more and more research papers on regenerative medicine in recent years. However, it is still a long way to go before regenerative medicine can be applied in the medical aesthetic field. In the past few years, I’ve also noticed an increasing number of younger patients doing preventive treatments to slow down the signs of ageing or improve their skin quality.
TVM: A lot of young women, especially new moms like myself, go through post-partum depression and phases of self-doubt where we question the way we look given the dramatic shift in our appearance due to hormones and the process of childbirth. How can MY Medical Aesthetics help us achieve a better sense of self?
Dr Lim: I always advise my female patients who plan to conceive to have adequate mental preparation, read more about pregnancy, post-partum care, and parenthood, and prepare their bodies for the changes. I encourage them to exercise to tone up their bodies, eat healthily, and apply stretch mark cream at the early stages of pregnancy.

Having an understanding spouse and good family support will definitely help with post-partum stress. If body weight and excess fat bulges are their concerns, I would advise patients to try the “no pain, no gain” way, exercise more and control their calorie intake before seeking help from the doctor.
TVM: Please tell us more about treatments offered at MY Medical Aesthetics, including Botox, dermal fillers, and skin boosters. Please elaborate on the incorporation of medicine and science in these treatments.
Dr Lim: We offer a wide range of aesthetic treatments ranging from pigment removal, wrinkle reduction treatment, dermal fillers, body contouring treatments, medical facials, skin boosters, anti-ageing treatments, etc. These treatments use equipment or products with high safety profiles and have been around in the markets for years. They are also HSA- or US FDA-approved and backed by many clinical studies.
Doctors must understand the medical science, anatomy, and mechanism of action of the particular treatment in order to get the best clinical result from the treatment. For example, Botox relaxes the muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles on the face. The doctor needs to know the locations of the injection, the depth of the injection, and the dosage. Any wrong judgement can result in unwanted side effects and unnatural facial expressions. The same situation can happen in dermal fillers. The doctor needs to assess the volume loss in the face, observe patients’ facial expressions, examine patients’ skin, adipose tissue, muscle tone and bone structure, and lastly ascertain whether previous aesthetic treatments might cause undesirable clinical outcomes. The right type of fillers injected in precise depths and locations, together with a keen eye for beauty, will lead to a nice natural result.
