Horizon of Khufu Singapore review: An extraordinary virtual reality journey into ancient Egypt

0 0

Ever wondered what it would feel like to stand atop the Great Pyramid of Giza, explore its hidden chambers or travel back 4,500 years to ancient Egypt? Horizon of Khufu: Journey in Ancient Egypt brings that experience to life in Singapore through an astonishingly detailed virtual reality adventure.

I attended the media preview of Horizon of Khufu: Journey in Ancient Egypt at GROUNDSEESAW Singapore and absolutely loved every moment of it. For 45 minutes, I felt as though I had genuinely travelled to ancient Egypt, exploring the magnificent pyramids, witnessing fascinating historical rituals and discovering a civilisation that has intrigued the world for thousands of years. The attention to detail was stunning, from the breathtaking landscapes to the intricately recreated interiors of the Great Pyramid. It was educational, immersive and truly one of a kind. In fact, I enjoyed the experience so much that I will definitely be going back again!

Horizon of Khufu

There are plenty of immersive exhibitions in Singapore, but this one stands out for the way it combines history, storytelling and technology. Rather than simply looking at ancient Egyptian artefacts or watching a documentary, visitors become part of a remarkable journey through time, experiencing places and moments that would otherwise be impossible to access.

Now open at GROUNDSEESAW Singapore in Parkview Square, Horizon of Khufu invites visitors to step into the world of the pharaohs without leaving the city.

An educational experience backed by historical research

What makes Horizon of Khufu especially interesting is that the experience is not simply an imaginative recreation of ancient Egypt. Its development involved several years of research and the use of architectural, scientific and historical data gathered on site. The exhibition was developed in collaboration with Peter Der Manuelian, a professor of Egyptology at Harvard University who specialises in ancient Egyptian mortuary architecture, particularly the Giza necropolis, along with his team at Harvard’s Giza Project. This research-led approach helps ensure that the virtual environments are grounded in historical and archaeological knowledge, making the expedition both entertaining and educational.

For families, history enthusiasts and curious visitors, that combination adds considerable value. Instead of learning about ancient Egypt solely through books, photographs or conventional exhibitions, visitors can experience carefully reconstructed environments while gaining a deeper appreciation of the civilisation’s architecture and cultural traditions. It also demonstrates how technology can make history more accessible, particularly when it comes to locations that are difficult to visit or areas within historical monuments that are normally closed to the public.

Immersive technology that makes you feel part of the adventure

Unlike some virtual reality experiences that require participants to remain seated or stationary, Horizon of Khufu allows visitors to move freely within a designated physical space while exploring the virtual environment. Developed by French immersive technology company Emissive under its Excurio brand, the experience uses a VR platform designed to accommodate multiple visitors at the same time.

One particularly interesting feature is that visitors can see representations of other participants within the virtual world. This helps create a sense of shared exploration rather than the isolation sometimes associated with wearing a VR headset. Families and friends can therefore embark on the expedition together, discovering the recreated Egyptian landscape and its historical landmarks as a group. The combination of movement, immersive visuals and historical storytelling creates a particularly engaging format. During my media preview, I was struck by how naturally the experience encouraged exploration and curiosity.

It is easy to see why this approach could appeal to visitors who might not ordinarily consider themselves history enthusiasts. The technology draws you in, while the fascinating subject matter keeps you interested.

A global immersive experience finally arrives in Singapore

Horizon of Khufu first launched in Paris in June 2022 and has since attracted more than 250,000 visitors worldwide, according to the organisers. Its arrival in Singapore on 2 October 2026 adds another international immersive experience to the city’s growing cultural and entertainment offerings. The exhibition is presented at GROUNDSEESAW Singapore, located on Level 3 of Parkview Square along North Bridge Road.

GROUNDSEESAW, an exhibition brand originating from South Korea, has previously brought immersive art experiences such as Van Gogh Inside and Monet Inside to Singapore. Horizon of Khufu introduces a different dimension to its programming, focusing on historical exploration through free-roaming virtual reality.

Created by Excurio, presented by GROUNDSEESAW and partnered with UNQP, the exhibition brings together historical research, creative production and advanced immersive technology to offer visitors an unconventional way to explore one of the world’s most extraordinary ancient landmarks.

Why Horizon of Khufu is worth experiencing

What I appreciated most about Horizon of Khufu was its ability to make history feel genuinely exciting. There is something remarkable about being able to virtually explore a monument that has stood for more than four millennia, especially when the experience is presented with such impressive attention to detail.

It is also refreshing to encounter an immersive exhibition where the technology serves a meaningful purpose. Beyond the visual spectacle, there is a strong educational element that encourages visitors to think about ancient Egyptian civilisation, architecture and the cultural significance of the pyramids. For parents looking for something different to enjoy with their children, couples seeking an unusual outing or anyone interested in history and travel, this is certainly an experience worth considering.

Having attended the media preview myself, I can confidently say that Horizon of Khufu exceeded my expectations. It transported me to ancient Egypt in a way that felt remarkably convincing, and I left with a renewed sense of wonder about the mysteries and achievements of the ancient world.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Would I return? Without hesitation. There is so much to take in during the 45-minute journey that I would happily experience it again, simply to appreciate the details I might have missed the first time.
