If you are a Potterhead and simply cannot accept the idea of missing out on anything that is evenly remotely related to the Harry Potter world, you have to visit Platform 1094 located on Serangoon Road in Singapore. Before I tell you about what to expect at this “not-so-regular” restaurant, let me clarify why I call it the “almost” Harry Potter cafe. Actually, Platform 1094 is not affiliated by the original Harry Potter franchise. However, it is a themed-restaurant with ambience, decor and menu that when put together present a welcome scene for wannabe wizards and witches (like myself).
You will not find real Harry Potter derivatives or properties but if you cannot afford the time and money to visit the real HP studio in London, this cafe will make you feel a little-less-muggle for sure. The cafe offers Hogwarts-like-uniforms, including the witch hat, ties, cloaks (with House batches – of course, I wore Gryffindor) and knitted scarves. They even have broomsticks, wands and specs. A small display area exhibits Harry Potter books, cages with Hedwig-like-owl toys and other awesome magic stuff!
And Then Comes The Food
The food here is good. The cafe serves a selection of delectable Western dishes and drinks that are on fire literally (more on that in a bit). The menu card has some interesting dish names like Giant’s Bread, Bloodberry, Elf’s Dream and Sweet Treats of the Wizardry World. From chicken breast to pork ribs and green tea to cupcakes – the food is good. The special items on the menu that add a dash of “abracadabra” are Mr Lich’s Flaming Brew, Chocolate Blackout, Sweet Treat and the special Red Velvet Wizard Cake among others. Enjoy pointy-hats, wands and golden snitches for dessert.
I know that you are psyched by now and cannot wait to visit this awesome cafe. But, trust me I saved the best part for the end. The best, most insta-worthy and magical thing on the menu at Platform 1094 is Mr Lich’s Flaming Brew, aka, the Burning Goblet of Fire. For, 15 dollars (SGD), indulge in this fascinating drink that screams Accio Joy! What adds to the excitement is that the drink is done right in front of you.
The Bacardi is mixed with Blue Curacao liquor giving the drink an authentic blue colour. After that, the concoction is ignited with a blowtorch. A sprinkling of cinnamon powder creates swirls of flames literally putting the drink on fire! It is a visual treat and tastes great too.
