Craft, colour, and community: A wholesome day at UOL Malls’ Green Movement With U

From upcycled Merlions to cardboard playgrounds, UOL Malls’ Green Movement With U proves that sustainability can be fun, creative and deeply community-driven.

We had the best time at the Green Movement With U media preview held at Velocity@Novena Square – a celebration that was equal parts fun, creative and meaningful. My daughter was on a roll from the moment we arrived. With three back-to-back workshops and a playground made entirely from recycled cardboard, the event proved that sustainability can absolutely be playful.

Rediscovering Singapore, one stitch at a time

Our afternoon kicked off with the Merlion Scales workshop – and what a start it was. Standing tall at 2.5 metres, the Merlion Re: Stitched sculpture was a patchwork of memories, quite literally. Made from donated school uniforms, the Merlion invited kids to stitch their own pieces onto its “scales.” With help from the warm and patient workshop mentors, Dishu carefully added her patch to the collective creation – a simple act that felt surprisingly powerful.

She followed that with a quieter moment of craft and reflection at the Merlion bookmark station. It was more than just a cute souvenir. As she coloured and crafted, we chatted about what the Merlion symbolises and why giving old things new life matters.

Cardboard playgrounds, paracords and pure joy at UOL Malls

Next up was Frame Your Moments, a workshop where children designed and built their own photo frames using recycled cardboard. Dishu proudly decorated hers – and I’m not ashamed to say it now sits on our living room shelf.

One of the biggest hits of the day was the Paracord keychain session. She chose bright colours and wove a cute strap that now lives on her water bottle. It’s useful, adorable, and a great reminder of the day.

Between workshops, we explored the SG60 Green Playground, an enormous installation made entirely from recycled corrugated cardboard. From the agar agar-inspired slide to the Peranakan see-saw and a nostalgic nod to the Toa Payoh Dragon Playground, every structure paid homage to Singapore’s cultural icons in the most whimsical way. And yes – the cardboard really was strong enough to hold adults!

A celebration of sustainability and heritage

Running from 18 July to 17 August 2025 across KINEXUnited Square, and Velocity@Novena Square, this year’s edition of Green Movement With U centres around the theme “Rediscover. Reuse. Reimagine Singapore.” Families can expect eco workshopsroving exhibitions, and weekend fairs featuring green vendors and upcycled art.

And if you love a good reward, spend a minimum of $150 at participating UOL Malls and walk away with a Personal Travel Blender, perfect for healthy, eco-conscious living on the go. U-POPP members also earn bonus POPPoints at selected green retailers.

Why it matters

In a time when conversations around sustainability can feel heavy, Green Movement With U offers a refreshing alternative. It shows that going green doesn’t have to be boring or preachy. With hands-on crafts, community storytelling, and colourful creativity, this initiative strikes the perfect balance between fun and purpose.

As a parent, there’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing your child engaged in something joyful yet meaningful. Watching Dishu learn through play, stitch with focus, and beam with pride, it was a reminder that small hands can help shape big change.

Don’t miss your chance to join the fun! Green Movement With U runs till 17 August 2025 across all three UOL malls- KINEX (11 Tanjong Katong Rd), United Square (101 Thomson Rd) and Velocity@Novena Square (238 Thomson Rd). Bring the whole family, get creative, and rediscover Singapore’s heritage through sustainability and play.
