In a bustling city like Singapore, where the hospitality and F&B sectors are integral to daily life, the importance of mutual respect between service professionals and the general public cannot be overstated.

At the launch event of Respect SG, an industry-led initiative dedicated to nurturing youth through the Respect Work Attachment Program (RWAP), I had the opportunity to sit down with Danny Loong, Chairman of Respect SG and CEO and Founder of Timbre Group.

Danny shared his insights on the importance of fostering respect within the F&B industry and the impact of this initiative on society.

The importance of mutual respect in the F&B Industry

When asked why fostering a culture of mutual respect between Singaporeans and F&B service professionals is crucial, Danny was quick to highlight the multifaceted benefits.

“For several reasons, a culture of mutual respect between Singaporeans and F&B service professionals is crucial. Firstly, it acknowledges the hard work and dedication of individuals who play an essential role in our daily lives. This recognition helps to elevate their sense of dignity and job satisfaction. Secondly, promoting respect within the F&B sector contributes to a more inclusive society by breaking down social barriers and stereotypes that often undervalue service roles. This inclusivity can lead to stronger social cohesion, where everyone feels valued and appreciated, regardless of their profession. Finally, when F&B professionals feel respected, they are more likely to provide excellent service, enhancing the overall dining experience and benefiting the community.”

Danny’s words underscore a fundamental truth: respect is not just about politeness; it’s about recognizing and valuing the essential roles that service professionals play in our lives.

Promoting pride and recognition in the F&B profession through Respect SG

Respect SG’s collaborative approach with a diverse array of industry partners aims to elevate the status of the F&B profession and acknowledge its workforce’s invaluable contributions. Danny elaborated on how these partnerships promote pride in the profession.

“Respect SG brings together a diverse group of industry partners, each committed to enhancing the status and recognition of the F&B profession. By collaborating with renowned organisations and brands, we create a unified front that highlights the importance and value of F&B professionals. This collective effort helps to promote pride in the profession by showcasing the dedication and expertise required in these roles.”

“Initiatives like the Respect Work Attachment Program (RWAP) and the Entrepreneur Mentorship Programme provide platforms for F&B workers to develop their skills, gain mentorship, and receive public recognition for their contributions. These efforts reinforce the message that F&B professionals deserve respect and appreciation and are integral to our society.”

Challenging societal misconceptions

Changing societal attitudes and misconceptions is key to achieving Respect SG’s vision of a valued and appreciated F&B workforce. Danny addressed the specific attitudes that need to be challenged.

“Several societal attitudes and misconceptions must be addressed to achieve the vision of Respect SG. One major misconception is that F&B jobs are less prestigious or desirable than other professions. This stereotype can lead to a lack of respect and appreciation for industry workers. Another attitude that needs changing is the belief that F&B roles are temporary or stepping stones rather than viable long-term careers. Additionally, there is often an underestimation of the skills and expertise required in the F&B sector. To challenge these misconceptions, we must emphasise the professionalism, creativity, and dedication involved in F&B roles. Educational campaigns, public recognition, and showcasing success stories within the industry are vital strategies to shift these perceptions and foster a more inclusive and respectful community.”

Aligning with the vision of equal recognition

Respect SG aligns closely with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s vision of granting equal recognition and respect to those in labor roles. Danny detailed the steps Respect SG is taking to ensure this vision is realized.

“Respect SG aligns closely with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s vision of granting equal recognition and respect to those in labor roles. Our initiative aims to elevate the status of F&B professionals by fostering a culture of mutual respect and appreciation. We implement several measures to ensure this vision is realised within our community.

“Firstly, our Respect Work Attachment Program (RWAP) provides students with hands-on experience and mentorship, helping them appreciate the value of F&B roles. Secondly, we organise public recognition events and campaigns to highlight the contributions of F&B workers. Case in point, we are having our Respect Festival this Saturday, 18 May, where notable panellists will share their F&B experiences and journeys. Thirdly, we collaborate with educational institutions and industry partners to provide training and development opportunities, ensuring that F&B professionals receive the recognition and career advancement they deserve. By continuously promoting these measures, we aim to create a community where everyone, regardless of their profession, is respected and valued for their contributions.”

As the June holidays approach, Respect SG offers an ideal opportunity for students and young professionals to engage with the F&B industry, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for these essential roles. For more information about the initiative and upcoming events, visit Respect SG.
