10 things you should never say to a new mom

0 0

Being a new mom is hard because it requires a significant adjustment to daily routines and schedules, along with physical recovery and hormonal changes after childbirth. Newborns require round-the-clock care, leaving new moms feeling exhausted and sleep-deprived. Taking care of a newborn also requires new skills, such as breastfeeding and soothing a fussy baby, which can take time to learn. The emotional toll of becoming a parent can also be overwhelming, with feelings of anxiety, mood swings, and depression being common. While being a new mom is rewarding, it can also be one of the most challenging and difficult times in a woman’s life.

So, please do not add to a new mom’s problems by saying these absurd things:

  1. “When are you going back to work?” – This can add unnecessary pressure and stress to a new mom who is already trying to navigate her new role as a parent.
  2. “You look tired” – This can come across as insensitive and judgmental. Chances are, the new mom already knows she looks tired and could use some encouragement and support instead.
  3. “Are you sure you’re doing that right?” – Criticizing a new mom’s parenting choices can be hurtful and undermine her confidence.
  4. “When will you lose the baby weight?” – Body image is a sensitive topic for many women, and this question can make a new mom feel self-conscious and inadequate.
  5. “I can’t believe you’re still breastfeeding/pumping” – Breastfeeding can be a personal choice and can be difficult for some new moms. This comment can make a new mom feel judged or unsupported in her decision.
  6. “Let me hold the baby all the time” – New moms need time to bond with their babies and may feel uncomfortable with someone else holding their newborn for extended periods.
  7. “Your life is over now that you have a baby” – This comment can be discouraging and dismissive of the joys and rewards of parenthood.
  8. “You should have another baby soon” – Deciding when to have another child is a personal decision and can be influenced by various factors. This comment can be intrusive and unwelcome.
  9. “I had an easy pregnancy and delivery” – Every pregnancy and delivery experience is unique, and this comment can make a new mom feel unsupported or inadequate.
  10. “Sleep when the baby sleeps” – While this advice can be helpful, it can also be unrealistic for some new moms who may have other responsibilities or difficulties falling asleep during the day.

There are many things you can say to a new mom to offer support and encouragement during this challenging time. You can offer to help with household chores, meals, or running errands, giving her more time to rest and bond with her baby. You can also remind her that she’s doing a great job and reassure her that she’s not alone in feeling overwhelmed. Listening to her concerns and offering a shoulder to lean on can also be a great way to provide support. Above all, it’s important to be patient, kind, and understanding, and let her know that you are there for her every step of the way.
