Dr Komathy Rajaratnam on how Scientis is revolutionising skincare with the Cyspera, especially for women of colour

0 0

As a woman of colour, I find it very challenging to find skincare and beauty treatments that are catered to my brown textured Indian skin. Many of my South Asian friends and other women of colour face similar challenges. This is probably one of the reasons why I stay away from a lot of “whitening and lightening” skincare products. However, when I received an invite to trial Cyspera and interview one of the doctors who could explain the Science behind it to me- I was intrigued because of two main reasons:

  1. Cyspera didn’t want to “make me look fairer” but rather promised on helping my skin gain good health and get rid of pigmentations and marks
  2. I was offered a chance to actually understand the Science behind this from Dr Komathy Rajaratnam– a pioneer in this industry (and a woman of colour at that!)

So, with this article, allow me to share some insights into what the Cyspera treatment is about and valuable inputs I got from Dr Komathy about this treatment, skincare in general, brown skin problems and more!

What is Cyspera and where does it come from?

Cyspera Intensive SystemTM is a ground-breaking 3-step regimen for the treatment of hyperpigmentation and has been launched by Scientis APAC, a division of Swiss-based Scientis SA. Before we delve into Cyspera, first let me introduce Scientis APAC. They are a leading Swiss dermatology business focused on skin pigmentation. They work to provide extremely distinctive goods to meet the demands of people with pigmentation disorders and aspire to be the pigmentation authority. They are driving the change in aesthetic dermatology, particularly in the field of pigmentation disorders.

Scientis has developed a new gold standard for a non-hydroquinone therapy for hyperpigmentation with the Cyspera Intensive SystemTM thanks to its team of medical experts, cutting-edge dermo-cosmetic specialists, and research investments.

Dr Komathy explained to me that due to side effects, conventional topical treatments for hyperpigmentation, such as the use of formulations containing hydroquinone, are not recommended for long-term usage. However, the Cysteamine Isobionic-Amide ComplexTM, a patented ingredient in Cyspera Intensive SystemTM, offers three potent synergistic actions for better colour correction and skin health.

The company’s purpose is to assist every person with pigmentation issues in regaining their sense of self-worth and natural beauty. This is symbolized by its motto, THE POWER OF SKIN CLARITY.

Independent clinical trials show that Cyspera Intensive SystemTM evens out skin tone as early as 4 weeks, including a 42% improvement from baseline in pigment correction. All people tolerated it well, and patient self-assessment data revealed skin lightening, improved skin health, skin neutralizing, and skin rebalancing.

I have been using the treatment for almost a month now and trust me when I tell you, I feel so much better about my skin. I had a lot of postpartum pigmentation, which has already cleared out from around my eyes and lips.

Deconstructing skin problems and understanding Cyspera better with Dr Komathy

Dr Komathy Rajaratnam, one of Singapore’s most renowned and respected aesthetic physicians, has been in practice since 1993. She earned a Diploma in Practical Dermatology from the University of Cardiff (UK) in 1999, and when laser hair removal was initially introduced in Singapore 12 years ago, she was among the first few doctors to receive training in the procedure.

To learn that she has been studying and practising skin for more than three decades blew my mind. Obviously, my first question to her was: how have things changed?

“People are more aware now. Women care about their skin and are willing to make the effort. Although, there is still a lot to educate and help create awareness. For example, a random sunblock you buy off the rack, might be doing more harm to your skin than protecting it. When it comes to pigmentation, most products are created keeping White skin in mind but there is demand and need for different skin tones. Things are changing but at a slow pace. With products like Cyspera, we are hoping to make this industry more inclusive,” she shared.

Explaining what makes Cyspera unique from other similar products or the previous edition in this range, Dr Komathy explained that the patented Cysteamine Isobionic- Amide ComplexTM makes it unique. It is a component of the Cyspera Intensive SystemTM that works in synergy with cysteamine to produce three potent effects for improved pigment correction and skin health.

Dr explained that people of colour are more prone to hyperpigmentation due to excessive melanin production; hyperpigmentation causes darker patches or spots on the skin, giving the appearance of an uneven skin tone. It is a widespread condition that affects a lot of people and is one of the most common dermatological issues among people. Due to their skin’s propensity to create more melanin, Asians and People of Colour are more susceptible to hyperpigmentation.

Pigmentation disorders may make some people feel nervous or self-conscious about their looks, despite the fact that they are harmless. This is where companies like Scientis are working with experts from the field to address these challenges by developing dermo-cosmetic technologies and ground-breaking therapies for skin pigmentation issues. Cysteamine, a naturally occurring substance that can cut melanin formation by more than 80%, was effectively stabilized in 2012 thanks to technology created by Scientis. When Scientis introduced Cyspera® 5% in Singapore in 2019, the drug swiftly established itself as the first-line non-hydroquinone treatment for hyperpigmentation.

How to use Cyspera

Another reason why I fell in love with Cyspera is that it is super easy to apply and takes just 10 minutes of my time a day. As a working mom, time is arguably my most precious asset and if a product allows me to regain my skin health by simply taking ten minutes of my day, I am sold.

The treatment comes with three different products- Intensive, Neutralize and Boost. The first step is basically applying Cyspera Intensive and leaving it on for 5-7 minutes. A significant antioxidant action is delivered by the cysteamine catalyst complex in Cyspera IntensiveTM, which helps to reduce the appearance of persistent brown patches and dark spots.

The next step is cleansing with Neutralize. Basically, after using Cyspera IntensiveTM, apply Cyspera NeutralizeTM, which is made with an AHA-amino acid combination that restores the equilibrium of the epidermis, and wash off your face with lukewarm water.

The last and final step is completed with the application of Boost. In order to even out skin tone, enhance complexion, and provide a natural and healthy glow, Cyspera BoostTM is created with an isobionic-amide complex that functions in concert with Cyspera IntensiveTM.

Cyspera Intensive SystemTM is now available in Singapore and Taiwan. The system will be launched in other countries in Asia-Pacific, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam in the next few months.Cyspera Intensive SystemTM is available for purchase as a set at S$399 at selected clinics.
