The creators of the critically-acclaimed Dim Sum Warriors® graphic novels (published by Scholastic) and the giant musical adaptation that toured 25 major cities in China are now offering a new FREE PROGRAMME for families who are looking for an enjoyable way for their kids to deepen their Chinese learning experience.
Aimed at kids from kindergarten to Primary 5/5th grade, the Dim Sum Warriors Bilingual Comic JAM is a FREE bilingual chat-and-draw-along session which builds vocabulary as well as creativity and is run via Facebook on the following dates and times: November 7th, 14th 21st and 28th, as well as December 5th, 12th and 9th at 10.30 am (Singapore time (UTC+8)).
Each session is hosted by award-winning filmmakers and the creators of the Dim Sum Warriors bilingual children’s storybooks and graphic novels Colin Goh (cartoonist of New York Times bestselling books) and Dr. Woo Yen Yen (who’s also an education professor with a doctorate from Columbia University’s Teachers College), together with a guest Chinese teacher.

Every session starts with a reading from the popular Little Dim Sum Warriors bilingual storybook series, followed by a draw-along, where kids follow Colin in visualizing keywords and phrases in creative (and funny) ways.
Throughout the drawing segment, we chat—bilingually—in a relaxed way that also reinforces the vocabulary-building. We end the session with Colin drawing anything the kids request—which is always a crazy, giggly experience!
“Too many kids we know think of Chinese as only this exam hurdle they must get past. Aside from their textbooks, these kids never read Chinese books and are often even afraid to speak it. That has been my experience with learning Chinese” says Colin. “We wanted a way to decrease their fear, and also for them to see the fun and creative potential in the language.”
“The JAM is adapted from the highly popular bilingual cartooning workshops that Colin has been running at the invitation of select international schools, reaching thousands of students,” says Yen Yen, who is currently stationed in Taipei. “Due to the restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we decided to take our sessions online. We’ve been running these for a few months now, and the feedback has been consistently excellent. We’ve even been told that whole families join in for some quality creative time!”

Stimulating intellect with creativity

The Bilingual Comic JAM is part of Yumcha Studios’ Dim Sum Warriors 点心侠® integrated bilingual learning system that improves learners’ English and Chinese simultaneously, and also builds cultural confidence, global competence and creativity.
“What a lot of people don’t know is that drawing has a lot of benefits for reading and writing. It trains the mind to focus, gets kids to express their imagination, and helps them find their own voices—all highly important skills for the 21st century,” explains Yen Yen.
Designed by education experts and award-winning creatives, the system combines cutting-edge literacy research with hilarious multilingual comics featuring adorable characters, a mobile app with vocabulary building games and reading-recognition tech that provides feedback on fluency and pronunciation, and live streaming jam sessions.
The system is tailored to meet the OECD’s new PISA Global Competence Framework and is certified for high pedagogical quality by Education Alliance Finland, one of the world’s leading edtech impact verification services.
