At TANYU 313@Somerset, Chinese dining becomes an experience, not just a meal

A first look at TANYU 313@Somerset and its immersive reopening, where interactive skewers, bold flavours and effortless convenience come together.

Some restaurant invitations feel transactional. Others feel like an invitation to witness a moment.
Our evening at TANYU’s newly reopened flagship at 313@Somerset firmly belonged in the latter category.

We arrived hungry and left gloriously overfed. Between the three of us, we ate far more than planned, not because portions were small, but because every dish demanded attention. From the Fiery Chicken with Green Peppers to the bullfrog skewer that quietly stole the show, from the Fried Egg with Velvet Mushrooms to the signature grilled fish, this was a meal where restraint simply did not apply.

TANYU has long been associated with grilled fish, but what it has created at this refreshed Somerset outlet goes further. It is a thoughtful reimagining of how modern Chinese dining can feel in Singapore.

TANYU 313@Somerset: A space designed for how Singapore actually eats

The first thing that strikes you is the scale. For an Orchard Road location, the outlet is impressively spacious, bright and open. Tables are laid out for sharing, lingering and ordering one more dish without hesitation.

The convenience is almost unmatched. Exit Somerset MRT, ride the escalator down, and TANYU sits right there on B3 of 313 Somerset. There is no navigating corridors or scanning directories. It is direct, intuitive and ideal for post-work dinners or spontaneous meet-ups.

The live skewer section is the heart of the reopening

The centrepiece of the relaunch is Singapore’s first self-pick Chinese skewer experience, and it immediately changes the rhythm of the meal. Diners hand-select from over 40 freshly grilled skewers, spanning seafood, vegetables and premium meats, before watching them cooked to order.

This section brings movement and energy into the space. It feels interactive without being gimmicky, allowing diners to curate their meal rather than simply order it.

Among the skewers we tried, the squid was outstanding, smoky, bouncy and deeply seasoned. The rice cake skewersfollowed close behind, soft yet structured, absorbing flavour beautifully. The bullfrog skewer, though not loudly advertised, emerged as a standout, tender, confident and expertly handled.

Where bold dishes meet quiet confidence

Beyond the skewers, the cooked dishes grounded the experience.

The Fiery Chicken with Green Peppers delivered heat with control, aromatic rather than aggressive. The Fried Egg with Velvet Mushrooms was a study in restraint, comforting, silky and unexpectedly memorable.

TANYU’s signature grilled fish remains central to the menu, now available in smaller portions for one to two diners. Prepared with finesse and balance, it reminded us why the brand’s grilled fish legacy still matters, flavour-forward without excess.

Even the drinks impressed. A pitcher of fresh citrus juice arrived almost casually and was nearly finished by the end of the meal, light, refreshing and palate-cleansing in a way that complemented the richness of the food.

Why TANYU 313@Somerset deserves a visit

This reopening succeeds because it understands modern diners. It offers choice without chaos, indulgence without pretension and novelty anchored by execution. Whether you are planning a casual catch-up, a family dinner or a group meal built around sharing, TANYU makes the decision easy.
