There’s something quietly magical about walking into the Singapore Oceanarium on a weekday morning and finding a giant, bright-blue Hangyodon waving you in. It’s whimsical, yes, but it is also a signal of something deeper: Resorts World Sentosa is using joy, play and pop-culture nostalgia to start conversations that matter.
This year, the beloved half-fishman character celebrates his 40th anniversary, and to mark the milestone, the Singapore Oceanarium has unveiled Hangyodon Marine Discovery — the first immersive Hangyodon-themed experience in Southeast Asia, running from 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026.
I attended the media preview with my daughter, who treated every installation as if it were a personal meet-and-greet with her favourite underwater mascot. And while she darted excitedly between life-size Hangyodon structures, I found myself unexpectedly drawn into the other half of this experience- the part that asks us, gently but firmly, to rethink our relationship with the ocean.
Where pop culture meets purpose
Though positioned as a festive attraction, Hangyodon Marine Discovery is built on a surprisingly thoughtful foundation. Each zone blends Sanrio’s lighthearted storytelling with real marine education developed by Singapore Oceanarium’s team of specialists.

The experience is designed as “a playful escape and a meaningful learning journey about protecting our oceans,” brought to life through immersive installations, interactive panels and vibrant visual storytelling across sharks, corals and intertidal species.
For younger visitors, this comes through as bright colours, fun characters and opportunities to press buttons, peek into habitats or pose beside giant inflatables. For others, it’s an accessible entry point to issues like marine pollution, biodiversity loss and why ocean health matters more than ever.
The duality is clever and intentional.
“Through [Hangyodon’s] cheerful and quirky world, we hope to make learning about the ocean a joyful adventure,” said Ms Lam Xue Ying, Acting Senior Vice President, Singapore Oceanarium & Destination Experience. “This collaboration channels his boundless joy into a shared love for the ocean.”
A standout highlight: The Hangyodon-themed animal spotlight: Corals
One of the most compelling offerings and the part that stayed with us long after we left is the special guided programme Animal Spotlight: Corals.
Here, the oceanarium expands the experience beyond the main displays, giving visitors a closer look at how corals are cared for, propagated and protected. The session gently introduces the science behind these delicate ecosystems and explains why they are essential to the health of our oceans.
What surprised me most was how deeply it resonated with my daughter. At four, Divisha notices details adults often gloss over: the way some corals resemble tiny forests, the different textures, the subtle shifts in colour that signal their health. She wasn’t just drawn to the visual spectacle — she was curious. She asked why certain corals looked brighter, how they “grow new pieces”, and what happens when the water becomes too warm.
It was one of those rare moments where a child’s instinctive wonder met real science, and the educators guiding the session matched her enthusiasm with warm, thoughtful explanations.
While she left proudly clutching her Hangyodon-themed souvenir, I walked away thinking about the coral fragments we had learned to identify, and the enormous work happening behind the scenes to safeguard them. The programme also offered a glimpse into Singapore Oceanarium’s broader conservation efforts, including its Research and Learning Centre: a Green Mark Platinum Zero Energy building powered fully by solar energy and dedicated to education, research and coral propagation.
For both of us, it became the emotional anchor of the entire Hangyodon experience, a reminder that even the smallest sparks of curiosity can grow into a deeper understanding of the world beneath the waves.
Festive, thoughtful and oh so photogenic!
Of course, being a Sanrio experience, Hangyodon Marine Discovery is also unabashedly delightful.
Visitors can expect:
- A giant inflatable Hangyodon at the entrance
- Life-size installations and photo zones across various marine themes
- Interactive storytelling panels on ocean connections, species and conservation
- Limited-edition Hangyodon merchandise and themed food
- Meet-and-greet sessions with the Hangyodon mascot
My daughter made a beeline for every photo point. For parents, this means you’ll want your phone fully charged.
But beneath the playfulness is an undercurrent of sincerity, echoed also by Kohei Imai, COO of Sanrio SEA: “Hangyodon has always been a character who combines humour with heart… this collaboration allows visitors of all ages to experience his world in a way that is both enjoyable and purposeful.”
Why this experience matters
Over the past few years, the Singapore Oceanarium has been quietly but steadily reframing what an attraction can be. It is no longer just a place to observe marine animals, it has become a space for science learning, environmental stewardship and accessible conservation storytelling.

Partnering with Sanrio might seem like a lighthearted move, but in reality, it is strategic: children recognise Hangyodon long before they recognise environmental vocabulary. Parents come for the cuteness and stay for the message. And perhaps most importantly, it softens the barrier between entertainment and education.
The result is an experience where joy is the entry point and learning is the outcome. For a region grappling with rising marine pollution and biodiversity threats, that feels meaningful.

Final thoughts
As a parent, it’s always a win when an outing delights my child and teaches her something lasting. As a writer, I appreciate experiences that treat young families with both imagination and intelligence.
Hangyodon Marine Discovery manages to do both by offering festive magic wrapped around a surprisingly robust environmental message. It is charming, educational, photogenic and grounded in real ocean conservation work. And in the crowded landscape of holiday experiences, that makes this one stand out.
If you’re looking for something meaningful to anchor your year-end plans, this is a beautiful way to end 2025 with curiosity, colour and a renewed respect for the world beneath the waves.
