A Fresh Spin: Singapore Flyer Reimagines the Journey for SG60

0 0

The Singapore Flyer has always been one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. But in August 2025, just in time for Singapore’s Diamond Jubilee, it unveiled a refreshed journey that transformed the simple act of soaring 165 metres above the skyline into an immersive 75-minute adventure through the nation’s past, present, and future.

An immersive prelude at Time Capsule

The transformation began on 8 August 2025, when the Singapore Flyer reopened its Time Capsule– first introduced in 2020 and reimagined for SG60 in collaboration with creative studio Untitled Project. Spread across two levels, this pre-flight attraction now serves as a fully immersive prelude that uses projection mapping, 3D animations, LiDAR, and cinematic storytelling to bring Singapore’s history to life.

Visitors are guided by R65, a time-travelling robot, through centuries of legends and landmarks. Highlights include the voyage of Sang Nila Utama, encounters along the Maritime Silk Road with traders Ping An and Ahmed, and stories of the Orang Laut, Singapore’s first inhabitants. Guests also meet mythical heroes like Badang the Magnificent, revisit island legends from Redhill to Pulau Ubin, and wander along an interactive Singapore River tracing riverside life from the 1800s through the 1960s.

The journey culminates at Under One Sky, where the familiar chess-tile void deck table sits before a 300-degree projection wall charting Singapore’s transformation into a modern metropolis. Upstairs, visitors step into Peranakan Walk, Red Dot, and the Garden City Playground, which celebrate multiculturalism and heritage through kaleidoscopic visuals, festivals, and interactive games.

From ground to sky: the Singapore Flyer experience

The 45-minute ground experience flows seamlessly into the Singapore Flyer ride itself. With the FLYER360 augmented reality app, guests can unlock new perspectives on city landmarks as they take in 360-degree views. Together, the Time Capsule and the observation wheel elevate what was once a half-hour ride into a 75-minute integrated experience—a journey through time and space that is both entertaining and educational.

“The reimagined Singapore Flyer journey invites everyone to experience the Singapore story in an entirely fresh and entertaining way, from the ground to the sky,” said Ringo Leung, General Manager of Singapore Flyer, at the launch. “By integrating immersive on-ground adventures with interactive in-capsule experiences, we aim to present a fun, multifaceted perspective of Singapore that goes beyond the traditional observation wheel experience.”

Celebrating SG60 in style

The relaunch coincided with Singapore’s 60th year of independence, and the Sinagpore Flyer made sure the celebrations extended beyond its capsules. At Whimsical Reality, its permanent art gallery curated by local artist Ah Guo, a commemorative triptych titled A Little Whimsical Salute was unveiled. The watercolour works portrayed Singapore’s transformation across three eras—the 1960s and 1970s, the 1980s and 1990s, and the 2000s onwards.

Lee Kow Fong or Ah Guo, is one of Singapore’s most celebrated illustrators, recognised for his nostalgic watercolour depictions of everyday life. A graduate of NUS, NTU and Cambridge School of Art, he has authored and illustrated over a dozen children’s picture books. Beyond his art, Ah Guo is a familiar voice in Lianhe Zaobao and an adjunct lecturer who has inspired generations of students.

From 6 to 10 August 2025, the Singapore Flyer also brought back its waterfront night market, complete with street eats and live performances. On National Day, visitors were treated to extended operating hours until 12.30am, offering one of the best vantage points for fireworks by the bay. Exclusive ticket bundles and dining promotions at 165 Sky Dining and Sky View Pavilion rounded off the celebrations.

A journey that continues

Although the SG60 festivities have concluded, the reimagined Singapore Flyer remains a standout attraction. Its refreshed storytelling through the Time Capsule, coupled with the Singapore Flyer’s panoramic views, ensures that both locals and visitors can continue experiencing Singapore’s story in new and inspiring ways.

More than just an observation wheel, the Singapore Flyer has become a cultural showcase reminding us that Singapore’s history is not only something to look back on but also a lens through which to view the future.
