Recently, The Vent Machine had the privilege of attending the World Kidney Day 2025 Roadshow organised by the Kidney Dialysis Foundation (KDF) at Sun Plaza, Sembawang. This impactful community-driven event aimed to raise awareness about kidney health, emphasising the importance of early detection and preventive care for a disease that often progresses silently.
A growing concern: Kidney disease in Singapore
Kidney disease has emerged as a pressing public health challenge in Singapore. According to the 2022 Singapore Renal Registry Annual Report, six new patients are diagnosed with kidney failure every day, and dialysis cases have surged by 50% over the past decade, now exceeding 9,000 patients. With these alarming statistics, the roadshow played a crucial role in educating the public about lifestyle habits that can help prevent chronic kidney disease.
World Kidney Day 2025 highlights: A holistic approach to kidney health
The roadshow was a vibrant and engaging event, packed with educational activities, health screenings, and interactive sessions to empower attendees with knowledge and practical steps toward better kidney health.
Here are some of the key highlights:
🩺 Free Health Screenings: Visitors took advantage of blood pressure, blood glucose, and body composition tests to assess their overall wellness and potential risks.
🏃♂️ Physical Functional Screenings: Conducted by professional physiotherapists, these tests provided insights into mobility, frailty, and fall risks, which are crucial factors for those managing chronic conditions.
🎤 Expert Health Talks: Renowned specialists from Health Promotion Board, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, and Food & Nutrition experts shared valuable insights on kidney care, healthy living, and chronic kidney disease prevention.
❤️ Inspiring Patient Stories: Attendees were moved by firsthand accounts from kidney patients, highlighting stories of resilience, determination, and the impact of early diagnosis.
🎲 Educational Booths: A mix of interactive activities and fun learning experiences made it easier for attendees to understand the significance of kidney health awareness.
💪 Fitness Sessions: From K-pop Cardio to Zumba, the event promoted an active lifestyle, reinforcing the link between regular exercise and overall well-being.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is often referred to as a silent killer because symptoms typically emerge only in the later stages. Many Singaporeans remain unaware of the early warning signs, leading to late-stage diagnoses that require dialysis or kidney transplants. Events like this play a crucial role in educating the public about the importance of early detection and preventative lifestyle choices, such as maintaining a balanced diet, staying active, and undergoing regular health screenings.
KDF’s World Kidney Day 2025 Roadshow spread knowledge and empowered individuals to take control of their kidney health. By encouraging early intervention, this initiative contributes to reducing the prevalence of kidney failure and improving overall community well-being.
Stay tuned! Our very own Shanna sat down with one of KDF’s inspiring patients for an exclusive interview—sharing their personal journey, challenges, and triumphs in managing kidney disease. This special feature will be out soon on The Vent Machine, so watch this space!
