As Affordable Art Fair Singapore marks its 15th anniversary, it has grown into one of the most anticipated art events in the region, coinciding with the global 25th anniversary of the Affordable Art Fair brand.
Since its launch in 2010, the fair has made waves in Singapore’s burgeoning art scene, introducing new collectors, supporting local artists, and offering a welcoming space for art enthusiasts of all levels. With over S$56.5 million in art sales and a dedicated mission to make art accessible to everyone, the fair has carved out a unique place in Singapore’s cultural landscape.
At the helm of this transformative journey is Alan Koh, Fair Director who has been instrumental in shaping the fair’s direction and success. His passion for making art more approachable and his dedication to Singapore’s art community have cemented his role as a pivotal figure in the local scene. Alan joined the company in 2010 and was promoted to Fair Director in 2015.
In a recent interview, Alan reflected on the journey that has taken Affordable Art Fair Singapore from a niche event to a cornerstone of the city’s cultural calendar. “A pivotal moment for me was our launch in 2010—no such events had been held in Singapore, and we weren’t sure if people would turn up. We were so relieved and excited when we saw queues forming at the entrance to the fair. We knew then that we made the right choice by launching the Affordable Art Fair to our local audience,” he recalls. This moment of triumph was the first of many milestones in the fair’s journey.
Affordable Art Fair Singapore making art accessible
The fair’s continued success can be attributed to its focus on accessibility. Alan explains, “Our key formula is making art accessible and introducing the joy of collecting to our audience. We continuously nurture the next generation of art buyers—nearly 50% of our visitors are new, and while their first visit might be for exploration rather than a purchase, it’s all about taking that first step into the world of art.”
From partnerships with iconic brands like DBS Bank and Nespresso to the inclusive atmosphere that encourages first-time buyers, Affordable Art Fair Singapore has created a thriving ecosystem for art collectors and enthusiasts. Alan believes these strategic alliances have been crucial: “These partnerships help extend our reach and offer unique experiences that complement the art on display. It’s about creating a more inclusive environment while enhancing the overall experience for our visitors.”
Looking ahead, Alan envisions the fair’s ongoing impact on Singapore’s art ecosystem. He sees it as a “catalyst for artistic growth” that will continue to support emerging and established artists, foster art appreciation, and strengthen local galleries.
As the Affordable Art Fair Singapore gears up for its next edition, it remains a dynamic and ever-evolving platform for both art lovers and collectors. With its unwavering commitment to making art accessible, the fair is sure to continue shaping Singapore’s art landscape for many years to come.
