She got married when she was 17 years old (rather 17 years young) and she had her first child – my elder brother, when she was 18. She was just a 10th pass out when she got hitched. Daughter of a Chief Engineer, she had been brought up with a lot of love and care. She was a bright student but had never been involved in household chores. Forget cooking, she had not even boiled eggs in her maiden home.

Today, she holds two Master’s degrees, runs an entire wing of a public school (from past 20 years) and is a homemaker like no other. She is indeed the Goddess of Small as well as Big Things, she is my MOTHER.

Today she turns 48, and oh so gracefully! She has been the perfect mother to the both of us – strict when we were naughty, supportive when we failed and loving us unconditionally all the time. A selfless homemaker, my mommy has been the silent support system to us all but what inspires me more, is that my mother is not just a ‘pillar’ to us (the family). She has an identity of her own. She role models women like Margaret Thatcher and Lady Diana, and has been quite a struggler-cum-survivor in her own life.

She has taught us that instead of cribbing about bad circumstances, we should aspire to change them. She has exemplified that if we put in the right amount of effort in the right direction, things change. If she would have surrendered to the circumstances in her life, she would have remained just a 10th pass out with 2 kids and a doctor for a husband (well, the marriage would have been quite a mismatch then too)! However, she did not succumb to failure or stagnation. She pursued her studies in all circumstances and excelled to pave a bright career for herself.

Now, was she that ambitious that she ignored us? No. Not a bit. She was always there. Even when Dad was away and she had to manage household chores, shopping, parenting and her career – all at once, she was still there. Quite a superwoman she is, I must say.

Today on her birthday, once again none of us are there. Dad has his hospitals to run while we kids have our offices to report to – but does she complain? No. A simple wtsapp status or a Facebook post cheers her up. She never demands anything. She has a supernatural sense of contentment in her. Maa, what are you made of? I wish I could be as strong as you, as selfless as you and as passionate as you. How can someone be so giving and still not self-ignorant at the same time? You define Feminism. You are the true modern woman, living in a perfect balance of giving and still being somebody.

She is the daughter-n-law of a well-known Academician and Author, wife of a doctor, mother of a Banker and a journalist, mother-in-law of two IT professionals but that’s not what she only is. She is Mrs. Mamta Pandey – a teacher, a guide, a counsellor, a mother, a daughter, a wife, a mom-in-law (and trust me a very cool one, I know her bahu and damaad would totally agree).

Thank you MAA for being born and growing in to what you are. Thank you for being the BEST MAA EVER. Happy Birthday! Love you, Raavan!
